Mother's Day: My DIY Gift

My favorite holidays are the ones with no pressure. The ones where everyone just wants to be together. Mother's Day is basically that in my family, even though we do give Mom gifts. We often celebrate my dad's birthday the same day since the two days land so close and are always in the same week. This year was much like every other year, everyone came over to mom and dad's and we had good food and great company.  A change to this year was that I was not included in the gift with my siblings. Not a huge deal, once I heard why... I have no children. No biggie. I got my thinking cap on (AKA Pinterest) and got to work. I decided to make something for the garden that my mom and I are going to put together this spring/summer. I found this really cute-stacked-painted-pot-filled-with-flowers-idea.

I started this project much like every other project I do. In Meijer. I collected three different sized pots, some spray paint, potting soil and flowers to plant in them. I had acrylic paint and brushes at home to use for the words and detail on the pots. The first step in this process was the hardest- finding a time in the day when my mom wasn't at home and it was light outside for me to spray paint. I used a paper bag and flattened it out so I didn't turn the grass white, and blow my cover.

After getting everything set up I did three coats of paint, two with the paints right-side-up and one with them upside-down so I could get under the edge of the pots. It was sunny outside with a slight breeze so this entire process went very quickly, about 2 hours total.

The next step was to get them inside before mom got home. I hurried and hid them in my room. Next I gathered supplies and gave strict instructions that my room was off limits. It's tough being in the same house as the gift receiver!

I gathered random round objects for the polka-dots I would be adding, and a small ended brush to write the phrase "Home is where mom is" on the pots. I ended up only using the glue stick size for my dots. I painted the bottom edge and used it as a stamp to get the "perfect" circle outline then simply filled them in. I free handed my words, I felt it gave it the perfect touch.

I worked quickly and diligently to get this project going. I was super eager to see the end results.

Once all of my pots were painted and had the detail I wanted I waited until Mother's Day to finish them with the soil and flowers. I raced home from church and put it together on the front porch for my mom to find when she got home.

My mom loved it. She found the perfect spot for it and although it's a little tipsy, it will do.

Until Next Time, Jackie
